Getting started

CoDev Code is the agent in your terminal; CoDev Desktop is the app it runs inside. What each one is, and where to start with it.

CoDev comes in two pieces you install separately. Underneath they are the same agent — the same sessions, the same models, the same config file — so which one you reach for is a question of where you would rather work, not of what you get.

CoDev Code

CoDev Code is an open source AI coding agent that lives in your terminal. You point it at a project, describe what you want, and it reads, edits and runs code alongside you. The same agent is also available as a web UI, an IDE extension and a GitHub / GitLab integration.

Start here if you already work in a terminal, if you need the agent on a remote or headless machine, or if you want to script it into a pipeline.

  1. Installation — network access, Node.js, the internal npm registry and SSO sign-in, step by step.

  2. Intro — install the package, initialize a project and configure a provider.

  3. TUI — the terminal interface itself, once it is running.

CoDev Desktop

CoDev Desktop is the CoDev app for macOS, Windows and Linux. It runs its own CoDev Code server in the background, so there is nothing to start alongside it, and it keeps itself up to date once installed. On top of a window over the same agent it adds sandboxes — isolated environments the agent reaches only through the folders you mount into it, where it can work without stopping to ask permission.

Start here if you would rather click than type, or if you want to hand a task to a sandbox and walk away.

  1. Installation — download the app for your platform, and what each installer asks.

  2. Setup — the first-run dialog: signing in and connecting a provider.

  3. Intro — how the app's two halves, Code and Work, fit together.
