Updates
The app checks for updates on its own and installs them for you, on every platform and every download the Installation page offers — the .deb and .rpm packages included.
What you see
An update announces itself at launch with a dialog naming the new version:
- Install and restart applies it there and then.
- Not yet dismisses it. The small arrow in the titlebar stays where it is, so a dismissed update is still one click away, and the dialog does not come back until the next run.
If automatic downloading is off, the dialog offers Download first and turns into Install and restart once the download lands.
Deciding when
Settings → General → Updates has two switches:
- Check for updates automatically — the check at launch and every ten minutes after.
- Download updates automatically — whether a discovered update is fetched straight away.
Turning downloading off stops a check at the discovery and asks first. That is worth doing on a metered connection: the installer is several hundred megabytes.
Check for updates stays available with both switches off — it is the one check that was always yours to ask for. It lives in Settings, and in the Help menu on macOS, Windows and Linux alike.
The terminal app
codev in a terminal has its own update behaviour, controlled by autoupdate in your config:
| Value | Behaviour |
|---|---|
true | Installs updates by itself, patch releases included. |
"notify" | Checks, then asks before installing. |
false | No check at all. CODEV_DISABLE_AUTOUPDATE does the same. |
The default asks. See Config for where the setting goes.
